A massive fire broke out at late-night in a Mumbai complex and engulfed the whole structure within 30 minutes. The blazes has killed at least 15 people, officials revealed.
According to local media, the fire erupted after midnight at a building in popular Kamala Mills restaurant and shopping compound. Later, an artificial ceiling made of bamboo fell down and trapped people inside.
The Times of India detailed that many of guests tried to seek shelter in bathroom but trapped there. A hospital doctor also informed that all the deaths occured due to suffocation.
Many people have injured in the blaze and several of them are getting treatment in hospital.
The cause of the fire at 1 Above rooftop restaurant is still not clear. However, police have filed initial charges against the restaurant’s owners.
Most of the casualties include women who were attending a party. A woman aged, 28 who was celebrating her birthday also died in the fire.
A spokesperson at the scene stated;
“It was a happy evening which turned into the scariest night for me. I was at the restaurant with my sister and friends when we heard someone screaming, ‘Run, there is a fire’. Within seconds, there was a stampede and the fire engulfed the whole restaurant before anyone could realise what went wrong.”
“The way to the fire exit was among the first places to catch fire. We managed to escape but not everyone could. We could hear blasts on the rooftop while we were running down the stairs.”
Indian President, Ram Nath Kovind expressed his condolences to the families of the victims via twitter.
Kamala Mills is a renovated industrial compound that consists on several upscale restaurants, bars, offices and hotels.
