Do you like the pictures that you snapped with your smartphone? Researchers have made an AI program that can convert them into photos having DSLR-like quality.
The program has been presented online and designed in a way as to add the brightness, colours, and textures that photos were taken by DSLR cameras need to possess over images that are taken with smartphones.
The researchers at the Computer Vision Lab at ETH Zurich in Switzerland stated that this may not seem enough. Photo enhancement software has been here for quite a several years, and it commonly comes bundled with an operating system of a smartphone. But just those tools cannot succeed to improve image sharpness, minor colour variations or texture details in a picture.
The researchers, still, found a novel solution. Why not give training to an AI to check out what makes DSLR-taken photos special?
The answer to this was a program based on an artificial neural network that studied the differences between the photos snapped by DSLR cameras and smartphone-taken pictures.
Researchers made a rig that took hundreds of photos at the same time by using a DSLR camera and three different smartphones. By examining those taken photos, then the computer program taught itself to improve smartphone-taken images into photos having DSLR-like quality.
In an emailed statement, the researchers stated that the network automatically knows what makes good pictures look good, and it then tries to improve the images so that they match these criteria.
Dozens of photos have been uploaded by the researchers as example photos, which display darker images that look very much brighter and more vibrant because of the latest software. Still, it isn’t yet perfect. Sometimes the program may add artificial colours to an object, for example turning asphalt into a greenish colour, or presenting visual distortions into the picture, the researchers explained in their research paper.
The software is just designed to work only with photos taken by an iPhone 7, iPhone 6, or Android phones, nevertheless, it can make better any digital images that might be requiring a makeover. Though, it was stated by the researchers that the website for their photo enhancer is presently experiencing very big demand, which is causing slowdowns.
