To reach the WTA finals last 4, France’s Caroline Garcia produced a stunning fightback against Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki at the expense of world number one Simona Halep.
Garcia had to wait for the result of the final round-robin match in Singapore after recovering from a desperate first set to beat Wozniacki 0-6 6-3 7-5.
Ensuring that Garcia wins the Red Group, Elina Svitolina defeated top seed Halep 6-3 6-4. By winning the title, Karolina Pliskova will replace Halep as number one.
This Saturday, the semi-final line-up sees eighth seed Garcia take on American fifth seed Venus Williams, and sixth seed Wozniacki up against Czech third seed Pliskova.
Garcia continued the superb run of form and says: “It was kind of weird, actually, to be here. I qualified last minute, two weeks before. I wanted to keep improving like I did. That’s why I think I won these two matches.”
Wozniacki, who had already qualified from the Red Group after two wins said: “I feel like I should have won that match, but it is what it is,” said Wozniacki. “I had the chance to serve it out and I didn’t. That’s really it.”
