At-least 12 armed militants have shot dead in Egyptian security forces operation in the country’s western desert. The operation held after a deadly attack on a police convoy last week.
For long, the western desert region has been a route for smugglers
Security forces raided on a farm hideout in western desert region on Friday and during the operation 12 armed militants killed.
An Interior Ministry statement detailed that, “They took a house in the farm as a temporary hideout faraway from security monitoring to receive newly recruited elements and train them and prepare the explosive devices.”
The clashes occurred near the Assuit-Kharga desert highway situated around 400 km southwest of Cairo, in New Valley Province. The place has a long border with adjacent southern Libya that has become a hideout for militant. The brigades also take advantage of the security vacuum there.
After clashes with militants, 13 bodies discovered at the farm. Some of them dressed in militant uniforms and weapons, suicide bomb belts, cash and ammunition also taken into custody.
The authorities didn’t reveal to which group the militants belonged. Currently, Egyptian forces have fighting with several insurgencies. Mainly, they focused on an Islamic State affiliate that has murdered hundreds of police in northern Sinai since 2013.
