Last Friday, at the 1st leg of Black Stars World Cup qualifiers with Congo, fans booed the Black Stars for their uninspired performance.
However, on Tuesday the Ghanaian National team buckled down and managed a 5-1 win in the second leg. The whole attempt at qualifying for the World Cup has had its toll on Asamoah Gyan. All this was really depressing and hence he wants to quit the Black Stars after 2019 AFCON in Cameroon.
J.E. Sarpong, a coach who helped train Gyan at the Accra Academy, said, “I have asked him to leave this team now. He has everything in football – money, houses, cars, and name. Just leave this team now and save yourself.
But he told me he wanted to qualify the team for the World Cup but now that that appears difficult, he wants to qualify for the 2019 AFCON and then he will quit.”
The 31-year-old is regarded by most people as the only legend left in the Black Stars, and this puts too much pressure on him. He is Ghana’s all-time top scorer and fans expect too much from him at every game.
And Gyan couldn’t agree more. After their game with Congo, he believes the younger players are the key to the team’s future, and they need to be encouraged.
