By finishing tied for 3rd at the Quicken Loans National in Maryland, the Scotland’s Martin Laird has qualified for this month’s Open Championship. To end on 5 under alongside American Ricky Fowler at Avenel Farm, the 34-year-old carded a three-under-par 67 to end.
The 29-year-old, Kyle Stanley beat fellow American Charles Howell III on the 1st hole of a play-off after both shot a final-round 66 to end on 7 under. Moreover, they even secured places at The Open at Royal Birkdale scheduled from 20-23 July.
Martin Laird said, “Anytime you can play in an Open, that’s my favourite tournament of the year. To have the chance to play it anytime is special. I’ve heard great things about Birkdale.” For the leading 4 players in the top 12 in Maryland who were not exempt, 4 open qualifying spots were on offer.
Sung Kang of South Korea finished in 8th -way tie for 5th and thus qualified. Stanley holed a putt after Howell missed from ten feet to claim his 1st on the PGA Tour in more than 5 years. He said, “I’m thrilled. It’s a special week. I knew it was just a matter of time.”
