The last-16 victory of England over Costa Rica, led England into the quarter-finals of the Under-20s World Cup in South Korea. Ademola Lookman, the Everton striker fired England into a first-half lead before doubling the advantage after the break.
Costa Rica’s Randall Leal’s late penalty was saved by goalkeeper Freddie Woodman but tucked in the rebound. Having topped their group with wins over Argentina and hosts South Korea, and a draw against Guinea, Paul Simpson’s side held on and remain unbeaten.
Victory in their opener against Argentina was England’s first finals win since 1997 and ended their 17-match winless run. They will face either Mexico or Senegal, who play their last-16 tie on Thursday, in the quarter-finals.
