Twenty-two final year pupils of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) have been terminated for hacking into the university’s grading system.
The students are said to have funded a hacker between GH¢2000 and GH¢4000 to manipulate their marks for the 2015/2016 academic year in the university’s file.
Rendering to the Registrar of the University, Seidu Mohammed Mustapha, the choice to expel the 22 students was taken without partiality to any criminal investigation.
In an interview on media, he said the honesty of the university was at stake, hence the need to “take these actions in order that they serve as a deterrent. So the Academic Board met and took a verdict and decided that all of them should be barred.”
Seven of the twenty two dismissed students had their pictures issued on the school’s website as a further sanction, because they did not aid inquiries into the matter, according to Mr. Mustapha.
In the meantime, police are inspecting the matter, whiles the assumed hacker has been granted bail.
The registrar noted that, the assumed hacker “reported himself to the police and was given bail, and it was through that we demanded to interact with him. He has since banded with the committee and showed remorse.”
