Almost all of us have gone through the uncertainty of not knowing if the eggs in your refrigerator are good or gone bad. While it is true that over time the quality of eggs begins to decline, this is because the air pocket inside becomes bigger and the white gets thinner. But the egg actually goes bad only after it is decomposed due to hold or bacteria.
Your eggs may be pretty good to eat for many more weeks after you suspected them to be going bad and threw them away. This article discusses some simple home tests to determine if your eggs have gone bad or not.
Check the expiration date:
One of the easiest way to know if your eggs are still good for consumption is to see the expiration date on the label. But sometimes eggs are still good by the time that date arrives. And if you throw the eggs as soon as the date arrives, you could be throwing perfectly good eggs.
In the US, eggs are usually labelled by the sell by or expiration date, depending on what state you are in sell by date usually indicates the time within the eggs should be sold after packaging, it is usually within 30 days of packaging. But it does not mean that you cannot consume eggs after the sell by date , as they are still good past this date. Now the expiration date determines that past this date, your eggs may not be very fresh.
If your eggs are still within the sell by, expiration date or within 21 to 30 days after the packed days, your eggs are still good and fresh for consumption. And even if the quality of the egg declines after a certain date, it might be still be good to eat for a few weeks after that date, especially if it is refrigerated.
However, if your eggs are past the date printed on the label, you may wish to try these methods to determine if it’s still fresh or not.
Perform the sniff test:
The sniff test is the most old, reliable and easiest method to determine if your eggs are still good. If you cannot tell if you should or should not be eating eggs that are past their expiry date, sniffing the egg is the best way to know if you should be eating it or not.
Take the egg and sniff it, if you still cannot tell, crack the egg in a plate or bowl and give it a sniff and if you smell thing off, discard it and wash the plate or bowl with hot water before using it again.
If everything smells normal, then it is a sign that it is okay to consume it.
Conduct a visual test:
Your eyes are also important tool for determining if your eggs are okay for consumption, outside your nose. Always check the shell of the egg if its cracked, slimy or has powdery stuff on it.
The slimy or cracked shell indicates that it has bacteria and powdery shell means the presence of the mould. If the shell appears crafirm and dry, crack the egg in a bowl and look for any pink, green blue or black discolouration. If you see any such discolouration, toss the egg in the waste and wash the bowl with soupy warm water before using it.
You can also see if the yolk or white of the egg are runny, it does not mean that egg is gone bad, but it could mean that the quality of the egg is declining.
Check by the float test:
You can also check the quality of the egg by the float test. It is one of the very common and old method for determining if the egg is good or not. It also is used to determine the age of the fertilized egg that is developing into a chick. It works just as well to determine if the unfertilised egg is good or not.
To perform the float test, gently put the egg in a bucket of water or a bowl of water, if the egg sinks to the bottom, it is fresh, if it floats to the surface or even tilts upwards, it is old. It is because the small air pocket inside the egg becomes larger as water is released, the air pocket when becomes too large, the eggs float on the surface.
The lack of knowledge about how to determine if eggs are good or not can lead to needlessly throwing perfectly good eggs away. Of the four methods mentioned above, sniffing test and cracking the egg open and looking for any discolouration is the most effective method for determining if the egg has gone bad.
Some eggs and foods that contain a dangerous Bactria Salmonella , look and smell perfectly normal, the best way to kill the bacteria is to cook it really well to a safe temperature before you eat it.
