Many people want to lose weight and so they often opt to quick fixes that would drop all the extra weight they are carrying. These include some special diets, which are not easy to follow but since they are to be followed for 4 to 6 days, people try them. These usually are overly restrictive and don’t last.
And some of them can be downright dangerous. Here are some of the quick weight loss fixes that don’t last or work:
Liquid weight loss diets:
Liquid diets are very common and followed by many. It consists of replacing all your solid meals with liquid meals or shakes. Some of the liquid diets include, cambridge diet.
Protein sparing modified fast PSMF optimist and medifast , which includes several different dieting options. While it is common to lose weight fast on this diet but weight regain is also very common.
It is not surprising since drinking liquid meals doesn’t foster healthy eating habits. This is necessary for healthy successful weight loss. It can lead to restricted eating or binge eating according to some research.
One 28 weeks study, obese women were assigned to follow one of the weight loss diets, by the end of the study, significantly more binge eating occurred in the group following liquid diet.
Detox and cleansing diet:
Detox and cleansing diets have become very common. People not only follow it for weight loss but it also sounds tempting because of its detox claims. These diets can last from anywhere from 1 to 21 days.
Some of the very common detox and cleansing methods include, drinking nothing but water up to 7 days, consuming nothing but fresh fruits and vegetable juices, usually taking clear liquids while taking laxatives, ends herbs.
These are so low in calories that it does result in weight loss but most of it is water weight, especially the large amount that is lost in the first few days. No studies has so far looked at these claims of detox and the possibility of maintaining weight lost on these diet except one Korean study.
In this Korean study, women drank a lemon mixture with no more calories than 500 per day for 7 days, even though they lost some weight and had improvement in some of the heart markers; they also lost an average of 0.6 pounds of muscle mass.
It is not surprising because these diets are very low in protein. However, protein is essential for a healthy weight loss, also the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn at rest.
What’s more? A recent research suggests that low protein diets drive MPY a hunger and fat storage hormone that can lead to over eating an weight gain. As for the detoxifying and cleansing , your liver and other organ regularly perform this function everyday so there is no need for these detox diets.
Crash or fat diets:
Crash or fat diets have been around for quiet some time now. They are famous because they promise weight loss if you follow very specific guide lines. Some of the very famous crash diets include,
Research also shows that over restriction of calories can slow down metabolism, cause loss in muscle mass and rebound hunger that makes hunger inevitable. What’s more? These diets are usually very low in proteins which make it difficult to lose weight in a healthy way.
One food diet:
This diet includes eating only one food for several days, it is also known as mono eating. Foods that are usually eaten on this diet include cookies, potatoes, eggs or apples.
This diet also can cause quick weight loss but it also has the problem of being nutritionally unbalanced, while eggs do provide more protein then cookies or potatoes, it lacks the fiber or antioxidants.
There are not a lot of studies on mono eating, but the few studies were conducted, showed that people regained the weight they lost, almost in every study. There are plenty of weight loss diets and products that you might find in the market, but they do not work in actuality. While they may provide quick weight loss, they usually are not sustainable, and people end up gaining weight they lost.
The healthy way to lose weight is to eat a well-balanced low carb diet and work out and give it some time, and stick to your diet plan and work out regularly.
