Former Attorney General, Nii Ayikoi Otoo
Former Attorney General, Mr Nii Ayikoi Otoo has stated that the decision of President John Mahama to free the Montie 3 has proved that Mahama is only a President for National Democratic Congress (NDC) members but not for all Ghanaians.
According to him, it’s very unfair to pardon the three convicts because crime ratio of this kind of offenses will get higher in future.
On Monday, August 22 while talking on a political show, he told Moro Awudu that by pardoning the three jailors who are serving a jail term of four months was also a confirmation of the NDC’s ‘Yen Tie Obiaa’ stance.
He said it’s not a thing to get surprise over because pardoning Montie 3 was for political expediency after being pressurized by the ministers and members of the ruling party to set them free. Many cabinet ministers and senior members have signed a petition to pardon the three convicts.
So, the President Mahama pardoned the three men after consulting with the Council of State on Monday, 22 August 2016.
A statement signed by Dr Edward Omane Boamah, communication minister stated, ‘The President of the Republic of Ghana, Sir John Dramani Mahama under his Excellency, and using the constitutional right under the 72 article of the 1992 Constitution and consultation with the Council of State has remitted the rest of the jail sentence forced on three people: Alistair Nelson, Salifu Maase (assumed name Mugabe) and Ako Gunn, who were verdict to four months’ detainment and a fine of GHS10,000.00 each for immoral conduct of threatening the life of judges.
