President John Dramani Mahama
Workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have revealed that they plan to introduce a new load shedding timetable to facilitate consumers to plan their doings to efficiently use power, but President John Mahama has requested the power supply company not to publish it.
According the workers, the timetable for the recent load shedding also called ‘dumsor,’ is prepared but the president advised we should not publish it.
The ECG workers have so expressed misery over the government’s denial to declare dumsor and let the ECG to appear with the load shedding time table.
In an exclusive interview with the media, chairman of the Western Regional Workers’ Union of ECG, Samuel Tetteh Agbetor insisted, “Dumsor is back, and government should be courageous enough to allow ECG to declare the timetable for load shedding.
“Ghanaians can state to the fact that lights go off for 24 hours but come on for 12 hours and so the president cannot sit in his relief zone and say that there is no load shedding.”
Mr. Agbetor indicated that, the present situation is alarming as most businesses are failing and many workers being jobless because of the energy crises.
He was not happy that the energy problem has been accused on ECG, adding that the sector contains of 3 segments – generation, distribution and transmission. “I work at the supply sector which is ECG,” Mr. Agbetor told.
According to him, the public outlets their anger on ECG workers whenever there is energy problem because they pay charges directly to the power supply company.
Mr Agbetor told the media that the present energy crises have to do with generation by the Volta River Authority further adding, “And so we the staff of ECG will not break to be blamed or let anyone to put our lives in jeopardy.”
The Regional Union chairman said that the government’s cause for the planned sale of ECG to an American company that the power supply company is useless and could not gather its bills is false.
“If we have sufficient generation ability, we would not have distribution and transmission problem, and so ECG can’t be accused,” he pointed out.
