Food that we eat has a lot more to do than just providing energy for the body. A lot of foods have disease fighting properties just if eaten in the right amount and for the right problem. Here are some foods that can help in quick recovery when you are sick:
1. Chicken soup:
Since old times, chicken soup has been used to treat cold. Well, chicken soup does help a lot, especially if you caught cold or are sick. Chicken soup contains all the important vitamins, minerals along with other nutrients that help the body recover faster, as your body needs all this more when you are sick.
Chicken soup also has protein in it along with fluids that help keep the body hydrated, if you are having frequent visits to the bathroom, especially if you have fever, chicken soup will provide you with nutrition and fluids and electrolytes that your body needs.
One study found that chicken soup was most effective in clearing out nasal mucous than any other decongestant, partly because of hot steam. Another reason is the presence of amino acid Cystein in the chicken, which helps break up the mucus and has anti viral, anti bacterial and anti inflammatory and antioxidant affects. What’s more, chicken soup is very delicious, you can also stir in some egg in your soup for more protein and additional nutrients.
Broths like chicken soup are a great way to get energy and nutrition when you are sick. They also are a great source of getting extra fluids and staying hydrated. Broths are very helpful if you have a hard time keeping solid food in your stomach. Broths contain different vitamins depending on what kind you are making along with additional minerals like potassium, float, phosphorus, magnesium and calcium. If you drink broth hot, it also acts as a natural decongestant. Many people buy instant broths from the store, if you decide on that option; make sure to get the one that has low sodium in it as most broths are very high in salt.
However, it is best to prepare your own broth from scratch as it is even more nutritious, having more vitamins, protein, minerals and calories.
These days, bone broth is getting quite famous, but in reality there are no studies conducted on it that prove its actual benefits.
No surprise here, garlic has been used as a medicinal herb for centuries and has many benefits, some of which are yet unknown. Garlic is known for its antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial affect. Garlic also stimulates the immune system helping in quick recovery from disease. Some human studies have looked into the benefits of garlic on cold and the flu, and have gotten promising results. One study found that people who ate garlic, got sick less often and also got better 3.5 days faster than the placebo group. Garlic reduces the risk of getting cold and flu by enhancing the immune system. Make sure to add garlic to your broth or chicken soup for extra flavour and additional cold fighting affects.
4. Coconut water:
Coconut water is a delicious sweet beverage that is highly nutritious. It is also excellent if you are sick and need extra fluids as it contains glucose and electrolytes that are needed for rehydration. Coconut water has been proven to help rehydrate body faster after exercise and mild cases of diarrhea and is also good if your stomach is upset as it does not cause discomfort. Some studies show that coconut water fight oxidative damage due to the presence of several antioxidants and also help in blood sugar control.
However some studies show that it might cause bloating, so it might be a good idea to start slowly if you have never tried it before.
Honey is also a famous remedy for fighting colds and flu since ancient times. It has strong antibacterial properties, it is so effective that in old times it was used as a dressing for wounds and injuries, and is still used for that. Honey is also very effective for cold and is often given to children; however, it should be kept in mind that it should not be given to children under the age of 12 months. Add 2 Tea spoons of honey in hot tea, milk or water for treating signs of a cold.
