Awareness on the dangers of shisha (a developed tobacco product) is rising by the Ministry of Health through the country which is utilized in some public entertainment places.
According Dr. Kyei Faried, the ministry’s major person on tobacco control, warns that one gust of the evaporated product is same to smoking one whole stick of cigarette.
Shisha is a new trend for the youth, is an evaporated tobacco product, drunk through tubes.
Dr. Farried said that, the product has more dangerous for health concerns than normal cigarettes.
He says that the Ministry in cooperation with the Drugs and Food Board has moved to abolish many posters publicizing the product through the country.
Dr. Kyei Farried was talking at the launch of the World no tobacco day in Kumasi planned by the association of NGOs in health and Ghana Health Service.
He further added that, “It is increasing flooding of our system with Shisha utensils and you have pupils particularly schoolgirls who think it is a fun to puff Shisha. About this, the sad thing is that one puff is equal to a pack of cigarette.”
Mr. Farried said that it is more dangerous than the cigarette because it passes through a pipe.
Hence, he said, “the industry is now trying to flavor tobacco products by adding menthol and other good things in it to give it a good flavor and to tell customers that it is now superior “.
The Health Ministry has torn down many of the Shisha billboards at spots like the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) link in Kumasi.
The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has pulled down some posters with Shisha machines on them in Accra.
