ACEP, the Africa Centre for Energy Policy Energy and Petroleum think tank is making a strong case for government to start for a shorter term renewable contract in its plans to concede the Electricity Company of Ghana to a private concessionaire.
62 concessionaires have so far put forward their bids with only eighteen of them being Ghanaian companies.
Currently, Ghanaian Government is considering bids for a private company to take over the ECG management for more than 25 years; but this decision is not yet approved by the parliament.
Head of policy unit with ACEP, Dr Ishmael Ackah said while speaking at the 1st Citizens engagement on the ECG concession forum held in the Ashanti regional capital Kumasi, that though ACEP supports the idea, if Ghana goes in for a long term concession to take over management of the poorly power distributor, it will be putting itself at a disadvantaged position.
He suggests that government of Ghana somewhat goes for a contract renewable over shorter contract time period.
