The GASSM has accused the Minerals Commission of lack of transparency in allocating lands or mineral concession for mining.
According to Ghana Association of Small Scale Miners (GASSM), lands or concessions are more difficult to protect from the Minerals Commission as some individuals are owed the concession who lease to the miners in turn.
When the Minerals Commission started the process of registering small scale miners in the country at that time they commented.
The GASSM formally alloted minerals concessions to them as the actions started to restructure the sector. Recently, the small scale miners were blamed of using heavy equipment to destroy environemnt and the farm lands.
The General Secretary of the GASSM Godwin Amarh said while speaking to media that the practice can be the reason for the increase in illegal mining which should not be blamed on the legitimate small scale miners who are doing legitimate business.
He added that some other people are issued lands and people who are not even miners are issued lands. So how then do those who are working at the mines get those lands to work on.
He said, we are saying is that, lands that come are based on first come first serve bases at the commission but people who have political interference, good connection, and along with the other things not making the commission work very independent with regards to the lands’allocations.
