Founder and 2016 Presidential Contender of the Great Consolidated People Party(GCPP), Dr Henry Herbert Lartey says democracy will be the failure if the Electoral Commission brings through its conclusion to close down minor parties which absence offices across the country.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has for some time now been seeing barring political parties without suitable number of offices across the country from contribution in the 2016 general polls.
The Constitution instructs that all political parties must have at least offices in 2-thirds in all 216 regions in the country.
This judgement compelled the Kumasi-based businessman and flag bearer of the breakaway United People’s Party (UPP), Mr. Akwasi Addae Odike, to advise an approval of ‘offices under trees’, in order to take stress off the younger parties.
Rendering to him, the EC should receive makeshift offices, explaining that political parties that cannot pay for to rent big offices must be permitted to erect temporary structures that can accommodate them.
However, with media talking, Dr. Lartey said the minor parties help in attractive democracy and shaping the country with their several ideologies.
