Akosua Busia is a Ghanaian actress, author, movie maker and song writer. She is a UK-based Ghanaian actress. Although many Ghanaians and Africans are not familiar with her name. She is experienced actress and has also made her name in the entertainment industry. As a movie maker and song writer she has written a song with Stevie Wonder and also directed a movie on her father. She is characteristically an African lady, who has so much love for her origin, although she has spent her whole life with western world. There is a lot more to know about this commendable woman. Akosua Busia is the daughter of ex-prime minister of Ghana Kofi Abrefa Busia (1969 to 1972). She belongs to a Wenchi Royal Family. She was born right after three years when on 30th December 1969 her father became prime minister of Ghana.
Her brought up is in Ghana but her study is from abroad as she belongs to a family who admire quality and good education. She achieved scholarship to study at Central School of Speech and Drama of London. After that on her dad’s decision she has studied in University of Oxford, England. Her father was also graduated from University of Oxford. Abena, her sister she is professor of English at Rutgers University, New Brunswick.
She became actress at a very young age of 16. She played her debut role in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet as Juliet in University of Oxford. Her siblings were also studying over there at that time. Although she has done so much roles in the movie industry but she is recognized for her main roles like Bessie in a movie adoption of Richard Wright’s Native Son with Geraldine Page and Matt Dillion in 1986, as Nettie in Steven Spielberg’s The Color Purple opposite to Danny Glover and Whoopi Goldberg, as Ruth in Badge of the Assassin in 1985, as Jewel in Rosewood in 1997, as Patience in Tears of the Sun in 2003. She has also worked on television in ER series.
She was married to John Singleton a famous American film director on October 12, 1996 from whom she has a daughter name as Hadar Busia-Singleton, born on April 3, 1997.
Her marriage hardly lasted for one year only. Due to some baseless reason Singleton filed a divorce case, which led to their divorce in 1997. Akosua claimed in the LA Family Court that her husband dumped her because he was about to get five percent of Shaft’s profit and he does not want her to be a part of it. She also claimed that during their marriage, he was involved in some other women from who he had a son name as Maasi.
After her divorce from Singleton he refused to take the responsibility of his daughter. Akosua stated that she is taking care of their daughter’s all alone like paying her school fees which is in thousands of dollars. She futher stated, this led her to debut, bankruptcy and emotional breakdown.
She has got a great personality look. She looks so young and sturdy. Nobody can exactly tell her age by her face look. She was born on 30 December 1966 as Akosua Gyamama Busia. She is the versatile and talented actress of Ghana.
Akosua is also an author of a Novel The Seasons of Beento Blackbird (Washington Square Press, 1997). She also wrote for a screenplay adoption of Toni Marrison’s Novel named as Beloved for a film version of 1998 of same name which was directed by Jonathan Demme. She also directed a film on her father named “The Prof. A Man Remembered. Life, Vision & Legacy of K.A. Busia.” She also wrote a song with Stevie Wonder named as “Moon Blue” for his album “ A Time to Love.
