Google has finally permitted the ability to mute individual tabs on its Chrome browser, after being cynical for over a year.
It introduced the tab audio playback indicator last year. An audio playback indicator is the little icon that appears on a tab playing audio. Nevertheless, what people truly desired was a facility to put that particular tab on mute.
There have been plenty of examples when a user opened a tab and suddenly an audio auto-played and they had to scroll through the entire webpage to find where exactly the audio is so they can turn it off.
Google back then argued that it was that if it offers a muting ability, then that will cross a very important line, They reasoned that, if they provide Chrome controls for content, they are suggesting that Chrome should take on a responsibility to police content.
But, all you need to do with the new feature is to simply right click a tab, without moving away from your current tab, and mute that tab. User’s choice with a muted icon, will be represented by the audio playback indicator. An icon in the shape of a crossed-out speaker appears on the muted tab. Unless the particular tab is turned unmute, it will not play sound.
