Gas supply from the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) to the Volta River Authority (VRA) will be cut by midnight today, Thursday, October 15, 2015, if the VRA neglects to pay a debt of US$103 million owed by the VRA to the organization.
The Managing Director of WAPCo, Mr Walter Perez, who made this known in Accra yesterday, said the decision took after a formal order from N-Gas, the organization that provides gas to the VRA, to WAPCo.
If the risk is done, it will mean an exacerbating of the power crisis at present confronting the nation.
Government is mindful
In opposition to the administration’s position that it was not conscious of the danger to cut the supply of gas to Ghana, Mr Perez said, we are sure those in positions of power in Ghana are completely conscious of this data and we are confident they are making the proper moves to counteract shortening.
Talking at a question and answer session, Mr Perez said WAPCo had drawn in the VRA, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), the important services and even the most elevated amount of the legislature to find an answer for the circumstance before it came to crisis level.
Shockingly, these endeavors have not accomplished the sought result, he said with misgiving.
He said the administration of WAPCo was distinctly mindful of and delicate to the effect that the order from N-Gas to reduce the supply of gas could have on power generation in Ghana.
We think that its regrettable and heartbreaking that the VRA’s debt circumstance has been permitted to crumble to the point where it now endangers WAPCo’s extremely presence as an organization and, in doing as such, likewise imperils the main practical choice of giving adequate on-time off take a certification for Ghana’s Tweneboa-Enyerra-Ntomme (TEN) and Sankofa advancements, Mr Perez said.
He said WAPCo was confident that, notwithstanding the present crisis, the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) remained a basic vitality framework for Ghana.
A Dialogue will proceed
Further, we are firm in our conviction that the WAGP is indispensable to the on-time and most reduced expense conveyance of Ghana’s indigenous natural gas assets. To that end, WAPCo will proceed to dialogue with the important powers and trust that WAPCo, an organization in which Ghana claims noteworthy shares, won’t be permitted to go under, Mr Perez said.
It would be reviewed that the administration as of late charged the PURC to concoct a debt supervision methodology to clear the more than $312 million debt, being the expense of supply and transportation of natural gas from Nigeria and the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant to the nation’s thermal units in the Tema and Aboadze thermal enclaves.
As of the time of requiring the procedure, the VRA was yet to pay more than $150 million, being the expense of gas transmitted to it by the nation’s infant organization, Ghana Gas, notwithstanding $82 million and $100 million payable to WAPCo and N-Gas, separately.
