While presenting the budget of 2015 mid- year Finance Minister Seth Terkper has requested to the government for an increase in the exports of the country, but the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has criticized on this request.
According to GUTA the Ghana Investment Promotion Council (GIPC) and the government are responsible for the increase in imports of the country.
Seth Terkper said that high imports are the reason to fall in the currency. In the 2015 budget review, it revealed that the main reason of downfall in the currency is that the imports of the country are higher than the exports. That is why he called on the GIPC to overcome this situation by encouraging the exporters.
He appealed to government to encourage the private sector institution like GNCC, GUTA and AGI so that they will encourage their members to promote exports.
On the other hand George Kweku-Ofori the president of the Ghana Union of Traders Association stated that the government should control the foreigner’s imports as they ignore the local businesses and import huge.
Moreover, he said that if the people have use to say that there is a high level of imports and low level of exports in Ghana then he will not understand why people are saying like this are they struggling to overcome the situation?
He said that GIPC and the government have failed to control the problem and the foreigners have been permitted to import all types of goods into the country.
In this way GUTA has criticized on the request of the Finance Minister.
