Instagram in a recent development has started a newsletter service called “Highlights” that will feature the posts from Instagram users you follow.
The photo sharing app hopes to bring back users who have drifted away from the photo network.
The photo sharing service has a first time in its history has sent a promotional or user engagement email.
Instagram needs users to avidly browse its feeds in order to accomplish its goal of sharing moments and boost its ad-based business model.
The photo sharing service adopted the strategy to prevent photos slip outside its boundaries. It did not let Twitter render its photos in-line; as a result people would have to use Instragram.
Instagram is reaching out to users eager to meet halfway. The newsletter ‘Highlights’ could remind users what they are missing out when they are not using Instagram.
The newsletter can solve a problem, common between growing social networks that display a live reverse chronological feed of posts. Networks like Instagram and Twitter are affected by this problem, but not Facebook because of its streams sorted by relevance.
User’s face unfiltered feed problem when they follow too many oversharers that drain out the posts from their friends that do not frequently post.
By surfacing the most popular content in your network, these effects can be offset to a certain degree.
