An Instagram personal image was sold by a controversial artist, Richard Prince at a price of $90000 without the permission from the owner he took it from.
An eye-catching photo that Prince printed on giant scale was found by him on a popular photo sharing app.
Despite the latest show of artist made hundreds of thousands of dollars at New York Frieze, the original owner will receive no share of the money made by her photographed image.
Doe Deere, whose photographs were taken by Prince without her permission had clearly said in a recent instagram post, that she will not take any action against him.
Lime Crime cosmetics company CEO and the blue haired founder have also shared the original photo, captioning that her friend, an artist Joshua David McKenny made the doll in the picture and also was not credited in Prince’s work.
Deere wrote that Richard Prince removed her caption, print and displayed it without her knowledge in the Frieze Gallery. She added that she wants to direct the focus to where it belongs and that is towards beautifully handcrafted doll.
The portrait exhibition images by Prince, a 65 year old, consist of 37 screenshot images that were sold last week at New York Freize. He is known for seizing found images and tends to cross a fine line between art and copyright violation.
He said that he does not differentiate between what he collects and what he produces.
He made a controversy last year at the Gagosian gallery in New York, not that his images were taken from somebody without permission, but because his images features women in compromising poses that included a candid selfie at the gynecologist’s office and images of porn stars.
