Khaled Abdel-Aziz, Egypt’s sports minister has confirmed that they are no more interesting in hosting the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
He added, “After discussing it with some officials, we have decided to withdraw and will support Algeria, so that they can host the mega event.”
Other than Algeria, Ghana and Gabon have also made their bids for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, as the Confederation of African Football will announce the hosts on 8 April.
Libya has already withdrawn their application after the ongoing political instability within the country.
The Egypt’s sports minister has not given any valid reasons about the decision, but only mentions that it did not make sense for two Arab countries to compete against each other.
The decision has been made after the death of 22 fans on 8 February when police and supporters clashed before a game between Cairo clubs Zamalek and ENPPI.
Egypt all domestic football matches are currently suspended until further notice, but most of them believes that the league will not be cancelled.
According to the some media reports, “If the league action returns to the football field, it will definitely be without fans.”
This is due to the incident happens back in February 2012 when at least 72 Al Ahly fans died in clashes with Al Masry fans at the Port Said stadium.
