Sitting on your favorite couch with a bowl full of your favorite snack in the most comfortable position and watching television is very tempting for all of us, but why do all the medical specialists consider it as unhealthy?
It’s not wrong to say that all the things that we enjoy the most are not good for us but eventually all the things we declare the most fun turn most dangerous for us and then we regret enjoying the unhealthy amusement we had, watching TV and becoming a couch potato is one of the same.
Our children are the one getting most affected with too much of this activity. It was seen that watching television contributed to poor grades, problems in behaviors of children, getting violent and scared, lack of physical activity and obesity.
It was reported that Europeans watch no less television then 5 hours, it was the same for Americans and Australians, which has led to a number of risk factors. Now new channels are being opened for toddlers and young children under the age of 8 years, but you would want to consider before putting your baby in front of the television.
The American association of pediatrics suggest to take safe than sorry steps in this regard, they recommend to avoid putting your child in front of the television under the age of 2 as these are the critical years of development in a children’s life. The researchers highly oppose this specially when ads of toys, dolls, snack and unhealthy food is marketed on the television. It would be much healthy if the parent spend more time with their kid in reading, singing and playing as this improves the learning abilities and help in development too.
Watching television can take the place of reading, dancing and singing which plays a key role of growth and development of healthy brain as reading requires a lot more thinking then watching TV. Too much TV watching has also contributed to the lack of physical activity that is the main cause of obesity.

A study suggests that sitting idle; doing nothing burns more calories than sitting watching TV does. It is a common thing to eat in front of the TV that affects our metabolism and ultimately act as a weight gaining factor too.
Watching too much television results in losing interest in studying and getting education, which results in getting poor grades and losing the passion and motivation of going to school and learn.

It was seen that most of the teens programs advertised drinking alcohol and smoking as a normal act to relieve your tensions, make you happy and sexier. Also most of the alcohol ads are shown during the programs viewed by teenagers that encourage them to drink such beverages.
Some TV programs show stunts and tricks that many children find very tempting and try doing them despite all the warning given by the programs which results in the destruction one way or other. Television programs also contribute to irresponsible sexual behaviors in teenagers.

Not only children love watching television, adults are the victim of health problems due to excessive watching of television too. It was shown in a study that for every 2 hours we spend watching TV, increased the risk of type 2 diabetes by 20%, increased cholesterol levels and weight gain risks by 15% and also increased the chances of cardiac problems resulting in raised mortality in early ages.
On the other hand TV is educating and providing us and our children with a lot of information from around the globe too, so it won’t be good if you cut back on TV entirely which is impossible in this present modern world.
Just educate your children and yourselves about the disadvantages of over watching of television, fix timings reserved for watching television and choose informative and educational programs to watch with your children, however let them select what they want to watch once in a while, pay more attention and get smart.
