Diabetes: Diabetic food, Infinite Eatable choices to make
Diabetes is a major health problem now days. Every 1 out of 10 person is suffering from it. There are two types of diabetes,
Type 1 is the kind that is seen in children and occurs at a younger age due to the genetic makeup and is inheritable, while type 2 occurs mostly in ages above 40 and is caused due to excessive weight and lack of physical activity.
Once you get diabetes, you might get different advises to cut down on your sugar intake completely which is very hard to do at once but the good news is that it is not true, you have to hold back your glucose intake in some amount but you can take up it in a moderate amounts. Your body needs carbohydrates, fats and protein to function properly so you need them all in moderate amounts to carry out your daily functions.
You need to drop off some weight, like only losing 5 to 10% can help your blood glucose stay within the target range. you need to educate yourself about diabetes first, many people get diabetes and they keep eating in the way they always had, you need to know that once you get diabetes, you need to keep check of your blood glucose levels by checking it with a Gluco-meter at least thrice daily. You need to pay attention to the signals your body is giving you, like in case of low blood sugar or hypoglycemia you may get tachycardia, sweat, feel confused, weak, and lose consciousness.
In case of high blood sugar signs are different like frequent urination, dry mouth and fruity taste in mouth or fruity breath, increased heart rate, in any such symptoms check your blood sugar and take measures that need to be taken. Don’t rush in controlling your blood sugar, settling your sugar might take some time in the beginning, you might need to check more than 7 times in a day and doctor might need to add more medication to your prescription. Sometimes doctor might quit your oral medications entirely and switch you to insulin, just follow up with your physician.
Many people still think that insulin is addictive and dangerous for your body, in fact Insulin is a hormone that your body makes up to digest carbohydrates and glucose, when your pancreas is unable to produce it then you need a substitute for it, which is supplied either by oral medications or by insulin injections.
Type 1 diabetics depend on insulin to control their blood sugar levels while type 2 diabetics depend on either tablets or insulin depending on their needs.
It was also seen in a study that people in America suffered from more diabetic complications as compared to people in UK, because doctors in America suggest more oral medications over insulin in people that are type 2 diabetic while doctors in UK tend to recommend their patients to use insulin over oral tablets.
Now the main issue that is seen is that how to control your blood glucose levels once you know that you are diabetic. You can still enjoy your favorite desserts and foods if you are diabetic, only the key to stay within the target range is to eat in moderation. Before you eat you should know the glycemic index (GI) of the food you eat, the foods with higher glycemic index (GI) are those which spike up your blood sugar level more fast as compared to food that have low glycemic index (GI). All the food that is high in starches like white bread, white pasta, white rice, white potatoes and refined sugars are foods with high glycemic index (GI).
Vegetables and foods have low glycemic index (GI), apples, pear, oranges etc are foods that that can be eaten more freely, some fruits like mangoes and bananas need to be eaten in little limited amounts. Vegetables are good for diabetics. As they are low in carbohydrates and fat and rich in fiber that digest slowly and make you fuller for longer period of time plus does not spike up your blood glucose levels.
Meat like fish, chicken can be added to your diet chart, however red meat like mutton and beef should be consumed in less amounts. Grains, pulses, chickpeas, white beans, kidney beans, should be eaten more as they are rich in fiber too. white rice can be substituted
with brown rice ,make a yummy fruit salad or go for beans and vegetable salad with a tall glass of milk or half glass of fruit juice.
You can still enjoy the different variety of foods like Indian, American, African, German or Italian if you are diabetic just note down the amounts of carbohydrates you take up. Eat more frequently; make your serving portions small. eating sugary stuff like donuts, chocolates, cake and desserts every now and then won’t hurt just check your blood sugar levels and exercise. Eat slowly and stop when get full.
If your blood sugar doesn’t stay within the target range that is less than 70 and 99 mg/DL at fasting and less than 140 mg/DL one to two hours after meal don’t get panic, just work slowly with your physician to control it. Eat in moderate amounts and check your blood sugar more often.
You can eat everything and anything and still achieve your desired blood glucose level if you want only follow the steps told above plus follow the advises given by your doctor and Good luck.
