President Mahama Met With Pope Francis
Ghanaian President Mahama met with Pope Francis, and had discussed the cooperation between the Catholic Church and government. This very first meeting of both leaders had held at the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City.

This meeting was held behind the closed doors but the official Vatican statement released after the meeting and labelled this meeting as “Cordial”.

According to that official statement, President Mahama and Pope Francis discussed and agreed on the strong and virtuous relations between the government and the Holy See.
They also pointed out the constructive role played by the Catholic Church in the social, educational and healthcare areas and the also noted the Catholic Church’s contribution in terms of promoting exchange of ideas between the different groups of society.

Moreover they have also discussed the prominent international issues specifically Ebola epidemic which devastated the West African nations.
In addition, the President Mahama also mentioned the charity functioning of Catholic charity organizations and NGO’s that are serving in most affected areas including Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
President Mahama also met with Peter Appiah Turkson, the Secretary of State of the Vatican and Cardinal.

The delegation of President Mahama consisted on, Lordina Mahama, Mahama’s wife and Hanna S. Tetteh, the Minister for Foreign Affairs along with the representatives of the Ghanaian Catholic Community.
