Oscar Pistorius has found guilty of culpable homicide of his girlfriend Reeva as Judge Thokozile Masipa deliver her verdict on Friday.
The judge ruled that prosecution didn’t provide enough evidences to prove that Paralympic star shot her girlfriend deliberately. She also dismissed the records of witness who claimed to hear the scream of Reeva before gun fired.
“The state has not proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused is guilty of premeditated murder. There are just not enough facts to support such a finding.” said Masipa.
The 27-year-old Olympian again and again insisted during his six and half month trail that he had fired in the belief he was shooting at any intruder behind bathroom door. He always said it was a terrible mistake.
However, Steenkamp’s mother was unconvinced over the judge verdict and said,
“Justice was not served. I just don’t feel this is the right sentence. I won’t believe his story and that’s the difference.”
In South African law culpable homicide is equivalent of manslaughter which can carry up to 15 years in custody.
The court will take into consideration the extent of recklessness Oscar had when firing four bullets through the door while reserving the sentence, Masipa, 66, set sentencing for October 15.
Oscar Pistorius left the court room surrounding by police and lots of cameraman. Masipa verdict sparked anger outside the court, specifically among women rights groups and in black community.
South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority said it is an upset moment that they could not gave proved premeditated murder conviction over Oscar trail, it would consider to appeal after sentence is announced.
