Ghana’s forest cover is at the risk of being severely damaged to substantial level, due to the illegal Forest mining. The situation is so critical that it is assumed that if illegal mining in forest reserves is not stopped then it can also completely vanish in the near future.

Meanwhile the commission said it is the duty of the stakeholders to deal with this mess and find a solution to stop it.
Currently, forest reserves Supuma, Subri, Bonsa, Upper Wassaw, Apamprama, Desin, Oda, and Atiwa, are at a great risk of being
wiped out due to the high scale of illegal mining.
Mr. Alexander-Amoako-Boadu, National Director of operations of forestry Services Division of the Commission, Has said that “the trend has led to the pollution of water bodies, while large territories of forest have almost been completely depleted.”
It is estimated that the rate of the current depletion of the forest stands at 65, 000 hectares per annum. The numbers tell you that the situation is very alarming and can banish the forests if it’s not properly dealt with.
A task force has been assigned to catch all the bad guys who are involved in the illegal mining of the forest. Two Chinese nationals have so far been arrested and are currently being interrogated by the Police.
It’s good to see that some progress has finally been made on continues alarming situation of the illegal mining of the forest. But a lot more effort is needed to completely wipe out all the bad guys who are involved in such activities. We hope that the Government really takes this matter seriously and sorts it out quickly.
