The Ghana FA said that they are not aware of any news related to the reduction of Ghanaian clubs from next year’s CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup competitions.
Ghana FA – No message from CAF on reduction of Ghanaian clubs
But the Ghanaian media has claimed that CAF has already informed the Ghana FA that they will be the only representative from their country in next year’s CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup competitions.
According to the reports, Ghana is allowed to have four representatives in both the Champions League and Confederations Cup competitions but the continent football governing body has ordered the country to have only two teams in the competitions following their poor performance of Ghanaian Clubs in Africa in recent times.
However, the Ghana FA spokesperson said, we have not received such letter from CAF claiming the Ghanaian clubs in continental competition has been reduced to two.
The Ghana FA spokesman Ibrahim Sannie told Oman FM, “We have not received any letter from CAF for reducing Ghanaian clubs in African top competitions.”
The Ghanaian clubs have failed to advance to round of 16 for the past last two seasons, which led CAF to take some harsh decision against the country.
The following clubs from Ghana failed to get into the group stages of the CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup respectively – Asante Kotoko, Berekum Chelsea, Medeama SC and Ebusua Dwarfs.
In 2013/14, Asante Kotoko (Ghana premier league Champions) and second place Hearts of Lions were said to represent the country in the Champions League while Accra Hearts of Oak and last season’s MTN FA Cup winners Inter Allies were to take part in the CAF Confederations Cup competition.
But if the news is right, then the Champions Asante Kotoko will play in the CAF Champions League, while second placed Hearts of Lions play in the CAF Confederations Cup next season.
Ghanaian clubs have been reduced by CAF until their side Berekum Chelsea was able to regain back the slots for Ghana when they finally make it to the group stage of the CAF Champions League in 2012.
