Under the administration of Kufour, the Former Minister of Trade said, we have to focus on other products in the country rather than only focusing on cocoa production.
He was speaking at a forum organized by Graphic Business on how to maximize value of exports to improve Ghana’s trade balance, the country have to think beyond cocoa. Cocoa is one of the most important agricultural product in Ghana which is a source of employment to almost 800,000 farmers and generates a revenue of about 2-3 million dollars a year.
The product is the fourth leading for foreign exchange, which is worth 30 percent of all the revenue Ghana is getting from export and also it is responsible for 57 percent overall in agricultural export.
It’s time to find some new ways to improve economy, instead of only depending on cocoa, said Mr. Kyerematen.
We have to make some serious steps if country needs to increase export earnings, there are other product to be focus like gold, oil palm, starch and salt, which can also be useful in adding an earning to Ghana’s economy.
He added, it’s time that the government should implement some new strategies programmes to achieve some better results. We also have to develop an infrastructure which helps in increase the production.
