Joe Ghartey, the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, said, I am only joining the flagbearership race for the main opposition New Patriotic Party because I stand a chance of winning. He told in Asempa FM’s political programme Ekosii sen on Thursday, “I think if there is no chance, I would have not joined the race.” The latest candidate who joins the race include, Essikado-Ketan Member of Parliament and fellow Legislator for Mampong, Francis Addai Nimoh. They will be competing against the two time flagbearer Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, also two time failure Alan Kyeremanten, Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku, former Minister of Trade and former health Minister Dr Richard Anane who are all interested in running for the presidential primary of 2014. There are also some other expected candidates that will likely to join the race includes, former information Minister Stephen Asamoah Boateng, heart surgeon Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, former Asuogyaman Legislator Kofi Osei Ameyaw and Ghana’s former High Commissioner to the UK and Ambassador to Ireland, Isaac Osei. All ten candidates are hopeful for the position, but the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) will manipulate and bring down the number to just five as specified by the party’s constitution. It is after the NEC’s preliminary sifting that the party’s choose from 150,000 Electoral College who will stand in the end. As per the party’s constitution allows, the flagbearer election must take place every two years before election.
