Romario – the former Brazilian national team player blasted FIFA for announcing an estimated benefit of 1.67 billion euros from the 2014 World Cup without planning to invest again in the country’s infrastructure.
The south American people has been blighted by economic problems over past years, with violent demonstrations during the Confederations Cup being played as a result of the Brazilian government’s decision to increase tax rates in order to invest the two main football finals and also the Olympics 2016.
Romario’s anger has now been vented by him at FIFA and President Sepp Blatter for prioritizing benefits from next summer’s finals more ensuring that plans are in place to leave a long term inheritance to make better social and economic issues in Brazil.
“Why are we organizing the most expensive World Cup in history, without any of the benefits to the community we were promised?”Romario wrote in his column.
In the Meantime, FIFA announced that it can make a 1.67 billion euro profit from Brazil’s World Cup, tax-free. Its simple benefit contrasts with the overall reduction of an effective inheritance.
“I never thought the World Cup would solve all of our problems, but now my fear is that this mega event will only deepen the problems we already have.”
