MTN Commissions Third ICT Centres At Techimantia
The MTN Ghana Foundation in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has commissioned an ICT Center of Learning at Techimantia in the Brong Ahafo region at a cost of US $ 100,000.00.
The ICT centre is furnished with 22 desktop computers, 1 laptop, a projector, colour printer, photocopier, scanner and digital camera along with the requisite furniture.
Mrs. Cynthia Lumor, Corporate Services Executive of MTN, in her speech during the commissioning of the ICT Centre, said MTN acknowledges Brong Ahafo as one of the key regions for the business of MTN. She expressed her gratitude to UNDP for partnering with MTN to successfully complete and hand over three of the ten ICT Centres.
“This initiative is in support of efforts to bridge the digital divide between the served and underserved communities and also to support the implementation of the mandatory ICT component of the new Educational Reform. “MTN believes it is important to empower the youth through various avenues like education, health, sports and quality entertainment and the provision of ICT facilities will greatly enhance this” she added.
The UNDP Partnerships Advisor, Mr. Frederick Ampiah, urged the chiefs and people of Techimantia especially the committee with oversight responsibility for the Centre to make it a lasting testimony of MTN and UNDP’s support to the community.
The District Chief Executive of Tano South, Hon. Bukari Anaba-Zakaria commended MTN and UNDP for investing in such an impactful project to the benefit of the people in the district. He said, “the burden of the government would be reduce if all other corporate organizations emulate the good efforts of MTN and UNDP”.
Witnessing the handing over of the project, the chiefs of Techimantia expressed deep appreciation to MTN and UNDP for supporting their communities with such a development project to support not only schools but businesses in the region.
The Techiman ICT Centre is expected to serve about 43 schools in the Tano South District. About 30 of these schools form the Techiman and Dermaa cluster of schools. Businesses in and around Techimantia will also benefit from the availability of the ICT Centre.
The grand commissioning of the first of the 10 ICTs was held at Ningo in the Greater Accra region in August 2011 by Rt. Hon Paul Boateng, a patron of the MTN Ghana Foundation. This was followed by that of Nyinahin in the Ashanti region) in September 2011. The total cost of the 10 ICT projects is US $ 1,000,000.00.
The commissioning of the Techimantia ICT Centre formed part of the Suncity fest celebration in the Brong Ahafo region. Suncity fest is part of MTN’s strategy to engage subscribers and all other stakeholders of the business at the regional level to strengthen our existing relationship with them and also bring the brand closer to them. Aside the commissioning of the ICT Centre, a newly constructed thirty-bed male and female ward was also handed over to the Sene Government Hospital as part of efforts by MTN Ghana Foundation to promote quality health delivery, nationwide.
A variety of activities were embarked on during the Suncity fest celebration including a health walk and screening, a live band performance by A.B. Crenstil, Nana Tuffour and Okyeame Kwame and a football gala for the various communities in and around Sunyani. There was also a forum for retailers of MTN products and services as well as a talk on investment by MTN’s partner banks and training on basic accounting skills for the retailers to support their elevation from basic retailers to entrepreneurs.
