World Bank has recently announced Ghana as a top gold producer in the African continent after counting the data of 2018 exports of gold.
Ghana secured the position of top gold producer after toppling South Africa as Ghana sent 158 tonnes of gold to foreign countries. That amount counted 15% more than 2017 gold exports of Ghana. Meanwhile, South Africa exported 139.3 tonnes of gold in 2018 which made Ghana top gold producer in the region. At present, four mining companies are working in Ghana, for instance, Gold Fields, Newmont Mining Corporation, Asanko Gold and AngloGold Ashanti. However, environmental issues related to artisanal mining and logging procedure has greatly affected the rural communities in Ghana. Ghana Forest Investment Program has initiated to benefits the people of these affected regions. The World Bank has also announced an additional $19.39 million funds into the program a week ago.
This program is striving hard to restore and protect forest resources in collaboration with cocoa farmers and communities. World Bank announced more additions into the program’s fund with the purpose of recovery of mining sites. It also aimed to involve the private sector in plantation expansion. Recovery of mining sites will lead to a reduction of erosion which is contaminating public watercourses at present. The involvement of the private sector will help to lessen pressure on natural forests.
