Ghana’s government has fixed the cotton rate for the coming crop season after conducting a meeting with cotton farmers and businesses in Tamale.
Grade A seed cotton will go on sale at GHC2.2 per kilogram in 2019-2020 season. The grade B, seed cotton, will be provided on the rate of GHC1.76 per kilogram. According to Wienco Cotton Operational Manager’s memorandum, the input price for cotton cultivation will range GHC351 and repayment stand at GHC159.5 per kilogram. The government took the decision after consultation in Modern City Hotel at Northern Regional capital.
The Zonal Manager for Wienco, Bakpa Bachang said that government fixes the cotton rate according to recent world market price. The government has worked hard to facilitate farmers to standardize the prices or grades of cotton bales. Meanwhile, he requested to farmers of Sissala East, West, and Wa East to work hard on this season crop. Their hard work will enable them to take the benefit of favorable prices.
Kassim Sulemana, a famous farmer from Sissala West District also appreciated the government efforts for reasonable new price and input rate for cotton. He said that the administration has made good effort for the cotton rate which met his expectations. Meanwhile, he also aimed to do more cotton farming this year as the government is now making serious efforts to improve the sector.
Cotton farming is also a source of jobs for the youth of the Sissala zone. However, the cotton sector remains neglected for years by the government. RMG Wienco Cotton invested $10 million dollars funds into the sector to refurbish it and to provide more jobs opportunities.
