Violent protests in University of Education Winneba(UEW) have forced the Central Regional Security Council to close two campuses of the university. The chaotic condition leads to injuries of students and caused destruction of campus infrastructure.
The dismissal of lecturers leads to the students protest at UEW which goes violent.
Police used gunshots and teargas to disperse the students who were protesting for the reinstatement of some dismissed lecturers. The university administration has requested students to leave the campus to restore calm and to prevent further infrastructural damages.
The students considered the dismissal of their lecturers unjustified for being the supervisor of their projects. They also demanded the dismissal of the Vice Chancellor, Rev. Prof. Afful-Broni over maladministration.
Students destroyed some Junior Common Room, pulled down billboards and notice board. They also broke down the windscreen of the bus belongs to Students Representative Council. A source said that rescue teams have moved ten students with injuries to the university clinic while one of them reportedly died.
The police also arrested two students over resulting chaos, a student journalist, Christian Larbi told media. Christian further added that student mostly injured with rubber bullets used by police to target them.
An eyewitness said that teargas fired towards the faculty building, canteen, and bushes where some protesters took shelter.
Central Regional Minister Kwamina Duncan has ordered the students to leave the Winneba and Ajumako campuses following chaos.
He further told the reason behind the decision by saying that “we cannot sit down for this violence to continue”. “Ours at the Regional Security Council is to ensure the peace and security of the university. So on the advice of REGSEC, we cannot continue to allow the university to be in session…every passing day, the level of insecurity increases or escalates. As we speak some of the buildings have had their windows shattered, the university’s bus I’m told the glass has been shattered.”
Heavy armed personals have deployed in the Winneba campus to prevent further damages.
