Rice
According to Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the Minister of Agric, if we did not stop rice importation in coming four and five years we will badly affect in terms of economy.
There was an increased maize production locally between January and September in 2018 so it will not import maize, about 1 billion dollars is being spend on imports.
The agric minister aims to increase demands to the local crop and to widely support local farmers who grow rice.
During a media briefing Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto told on Tuesday that Ministry of agriculture import around 1 billion dollars of grains into Ghana and we decided to stop import in next four and five years because we must focus on our infrastructure instead of importing goods that area already produces by our local farmers, we must support our people in this regard. We are currently focusing on rice and soya that we need to stop importation and poultry industry as well.
Local production is lack of increased demand as imported rice is being widely used and sold in local market, so we need to increase local consumption to stop importation. Local farmers will also facilitate with the modern machinery to increase the quality production.
