One person has died and dozens more injured in an explosion at a rally for the new PM Abiy Ahmed, Ethiopian officials said.
In an earlier statement, Mr. Abiy had said that several people had killed. Mr. Abiy called the incident an “unsuccessful attempt by forces who do not want to see Ethiopia united”.
He immediately took away after the blast. The incident thought to occur after a grenade thrown amid thousands of people in Addis Ababa’s Meskel Square.
According to Ethiopia’s health minister tweet, one person had died while 154 injured with 10 of them in critical condition.
Mr. Abiy became prime minister after his predecessor Hailemariam Desalegn suddenly resigned in February.
He is also the country’s first leader belong to the ethnic Oromo group. The group has been the center of nearly three years of anti-government protests which left hundreds of people dead.
Since joining office he has also begun passing a series of reforms including unblocking hundreds of websites and TV channels.
Eritrea has also strongly condemned the attack on Mr. Abiy’s rally. Its ambassador to Japan Estifanos Afeworki said that the rally had been a protest for peace, the first of its kind in the history of Ethiopia.
The US embassy in Addis Ababa also condemned the explosion and tweeted: “Violence has no place as Ethiopia pursues meaningful political and economic reforms.”
