In both the men’s and women’s hockey at the Commonwealth Games, England won bronze medals with victories over India.
To secure England’s 100th medal at the Games on the Gold Coast, the women’s team eased to a 6-0 victory. Since the sport’s introduction in 1998, it maintained the country’s run of winning a hockey medal at every Games.
For the men’s team, Sam Ward scored twice as they held off India to win 2-1 and also make the podium. Captain Danson said: “It was a resilient performance. It’s a relief when you’ve done the work at home, and you’ve got the tactics and the ability.
“This performance shows the grit that we’re about. Sport is challenging, sport is tough. The best athletes are the most resilient, that’s why I am so proud of this team.”
In the women’s gold-medal match, New Zealand beat Australia 4-1 for their first Commonwealth title. The same nations go head to head in the men’s final later.
