Whereas all the people are expecting the next-gen high-end graphics cards to be based simply on Volta, there may prove to be a twist. Germany based Heise states that the next-gen Nvidia cards will be named as “Ampere” and not “Volta”.
This change in things is alright up to the expectations. At present, Volta is working on HBM2 memory which is not available in very large mass-volume quantities, and it is rather expensive to buy and implement too. Previously in this week, it was reported that GDDR6 is coming and closing in, very fast. So yeah, it may prove to be a simple code-name change, it could just be Volta having GDDR6. In that instance, Volta would continue to be on track for the enterprise side of things counting data-centres with its Tensor cores, and Ampere for the consumer parts. Heise is normally well-informed, something code-named “Ampere” could be reasonable; they mentioned that info is expected to be declared on the next GPU technology conference.
To get everything short, the “Ampere” GPUs series could prove to be architecture better suitable for consumers, and not only the “deep learning” market and might be simply based on GDDR6 graphics memory. For the present moment, let us name it what it is though, a gossip and not a thing further than that.
