University of Ghana
The rise in the fees for the 2017/2018 academic year is now becoming a rising concern for the continuing students of the University of Ghana.
The university from last few years continuously increases fees based on prevailing inflation rate plus 2%.
In an interview given to the Citi News by some students, they told that the current fees are expensive and also appealed for a reduction in their fees.
One of them told that students offering distance education courses will go through insufferable hardship following the rise in their fees.
The students told that in previous semester they pay GH¢2,499; and now according to the new academic calendar their fees is GHc2800. That is a GH¢300 difference…we cannot afford it.
One of the student said that when the university increases their fees last year we accepted it because it makes sense in 2015/2016, we saw a rising inflation, but then from 2016/2017, we are looking at the inflation figure dropping so what’s the reason for the increase.? Even then if they have decided that they will increase the fees it should be something marginal, something that can be acceptable by the students, but in our case the increase the increase is getting too close to GH¢200.even the hall fees have also increased…that much increase in fees does not make sense.
Daniel Oteng, The President of the Students Representative Council, has also said that such increase in the fees of the students is unacceptable.
