A device has been designed by the researchers which will harvest the water from dried air using sunlight as the energy source. The device can pull liters of water over a period of 12 hours.
One can feel excited when thinking of a world where everyone will have the opportunity to meet his water needs even in the driest of the seasons. This water harvester will serve the purpose by just using the sunlight.
The device can pour liters of water each day in areas with humidity as low as below 20%.
The solar power harvester was designed and developed at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) using a metal-organic framework designed at the University of California.
The key component of the device is the porous metal organic framework that absorbs 20% of its weight in waters from low humidity air.
Sunlight will heat the metal organic framework releasing the water vapors. These water vapors formed will condense to give liters of water.
Water shortages and associated dilemmas of food crisis and famine affect huge populations each year especially in Africa.
Somalia faced the worst water crisis in 2011 resulting in 5000 deaths. Parts of Ghana are deprived of clean drinking water facilities.
Even parts of Asia are suffering from water shortages. The land is turning out to arid and barren in parts of sub-continent.
This latest invention by researchers of MIT will certainly contribute positively to overcome water shortages.
People will get a chance to meet their everyday needs from the water poured by solar water harvester.
