Fufu, a popular local food
Some Kumasi residents in the Ashanti region are severely complaining about the unavailability of Cassva, (a major ingredient used for preparing fufu), a popular local food.
The Kumasi residents said, the disturbing development has forced some restaurant operators and ‘chop bar’ to increase price of Fufu from one Ghana cedi to 5 Ghana cedis per plate.
Some of the chop bar operators who spoke to the media said that the cassava shortage is as a result of poor rainfall and change in weather conditions in the beginning of the 2016.
The cassava used in preparing fufu aside the shortage, has lost some quality as a result of the changes in weather pattern.
They said, traders are complaining that a bag of cassava now costs GHC100 when under normal circumstances; at most it should be GHC40. The poorer aspect is that the taste of fufu is indistinct because of the poor quality of cassava these days.
One chop bar operator said, when the cassava is cooked it becomes harder than normal which makes pounding difficult thereby producing lumps in the fufu.
Maame Kyerewaa said that production of cassava has decreased in the region in recent times because of the weather changes and pleaded to the government to help cassava farmers with the necessary farming inputs to increase production.
