One of Ghana’s most talented rappers, Okyeame Kwame has emphatically stated that Ghanaians worship mediocrity in the music scene and that’s why our Ghanaian music does not make it up to international standard.
Rap Docta, while in a discussion session with the students of the Ghana Institute of Journalism, said mostly the music made here is just noise and that is why our songs don’t become international hits.
OK, as he’s famously called, applauded some brilliant Ghanaian musicians like Osibisa, Rocky Dawuni and Ebo Taylor who have been successful in making Ghanaian music known into the world.
“There is a lot of hope for Ghanaian music to make its way into the international market but I think the standard of music being made here is somewhat lower than that of international standard. Because we only make noise and love mediocrity. We won’t go places until we leave mediocrity. Some artists like Rocky Dawuni, Ebo Taylor and Osibisa have been able to get successful in International market just because the music they produce is quite similar to the kind of music being produced internationally. So as an industry, I think we should rise above the recent standard.”
Okyeame Kwame is one of the best musicians Ghana has ever produced. He has made himself notable in the rap category through his talent, creativity and command over the local language.
Throughout his career, he has won many awards including the ultimate award, Artiste of the Year in the early 2000s in the Ghana Music Awards.
