Twitter while facing a proposed class action lawsuit that claims the online messaging service discriminates against its female workforce, is setting modest goals to diversify its workforce.
Data showing that Twitter primarily employes white and Asian men in high-paying technology jobs like most of its industry peers, along with the hiring plans was published on Friday.
Next year Twitter plans to hire women for its technology jobs which is more than 13 percent its current female employees. Twitter not just promised to hire more blacks and Hispanics, but also wants women to take up 25 percent of its leadership jobs.
Attacking the company’s policy for women, a former engineer at Twitter filed a lawsuit in March. Although Twitter has denied the allegations, the lawsuit claimed that the company has history of bypassing the qualified women for upgrades.
Twitter currently employs about 1400 women, which are 34 percent of its total workforce, 4100 employees. For next year, the company aims to increase it to 35 percent women employees of its total workforce.
Not just Twitter other companies like Facebook, Google and Apple are also taking steps to create diversity in their workforce and to reduce their dependence on Asian and white guys for programming jobs that typically pay $100000 to$ 300000.
However, diversifying the workforce is not the biggest issue faced by Twitter. The San Fransisco based company is not making additional money since its first Tweet was sent some nine years ago and is still looking for a new CEO to increase its user growth.
